This shop has the most amazing and adorable plush toys! They look so cuddly and soft and their faces are so detailed, they just seem to come alive. Alright, enough gushing; let's meet Mandy Quinn, the designer, creator, and owner of Mandy's Joys.

How I came into being: I have been sewing off and on my entire life. When I first started my business, I was making crochet items for my kids and enjoyed it, but it was not quite "it" for me. I got into origami for a while, but still, even thought I loved critters that I was making, it still was not "it". With the pending birth of my first daughter, I was driven to make her a doll. From there, I started back into plush critters, but sewn and THAT was IT for me. I have always had a place in my heart for plush toys anyway, and watching my older kids fall for them, and fall for them so much myself...that was it. The rest was history.

What inspires you? My kids inspire me so much, as does my husband. Watching everyone in the house get excited with each item made makes us ALL happy. We love nature and that helps bring new colors and visions to mind.

What are your hobbies besides creating? I love to read, not that I get much time for that. We also love going for walks at the amazing arboretum not far from home and just enjoying the beauty around us.
What is your favorite item you have created? That is a hard one! Each creature sparks an attachment, but there is one ogre that somehow had the face my daughter would get when she was little. We would tell her "baby sniff" and she would make such a face we would all laugh!! Add that face to the hair - it looked JUST likes hers at the time...that ogre will never leave my sight. Way too many memories.

Favorite other small businesses? Wooly Topic has amazing felted creatures, Stella and Luna makes some adorable lovies and SimplyCreativebyDL makes some adorable clothes that even fit my creatures with tails!!
So, because I love turtles I have to say her turtles are my favorite. But, honestly, I love them all. :) Another awesome fact about her shop is that she ice dyes some of her fabric to get those awesome bright color combos! Which creation is your favorite?

Please stop by her shop and tell her I sent you! Have a great day and join us next week for another awesome feature!

Kristin Demay is the face behind the adorable selection of creations. I had a hard time choosing which of her items to feature, there were so many cute things! I think my favorite is the playmat. I have 3 boys and there are so many amazing girl items; it's nice to see some boy themed things. ;)

Here's what Kristin shared with us:
I am a stay at home mom to 4 beautiful little Lovebugs. They range from 8 to 1!

My oldest daughter was my inspiration to start creating bows and 3 years ago I opened up a shop on facebook. Since then my little shop has gone beyond just bows and now launches new items 3 times a week!!
A part of me goes into each creation so picking a favorite is hard!! It changes all the time.

Her facebook page has a ton of adorable items for your little ones. Here's what she has decided to share with us:

I am a stay-at-home mother of three and I started making things for my daughter for cheerleading. I began selling my creations and my business grew to include monogramming and embroidering.
Yessss! :) I am hoping to make this another weekly feature where every Friday I post some items I've seen throughout the week that I absolutely love. Even though it is too late to order any of these for Mother's Day, I still thought it'd be fitting to feature items honoring our dear mothers.

This first one is my favorite! I've been looking at it for awhile...actually I love a lot of her stuff and am hoping to purchase from her soon! I don't wear a lot of jewelry. I mean, I would like to but always forget. Anyway, I love the simple yet elegant design of this bracelet!

This next pick is an original design by BugabooBearDesigns. I love everything about it-the cheery colors, the saying, and the layout. It's perfect for the flower-loving mom and personally, I could see it sitting on my mom's desk at work. :)

I'm a big nature lover and like to incorporate it into my decorating. A dear friend of mine made me a bird's nest necklace and I love it. This next idea is practically genius. Let the folks at InspiredArtPrints create a personalized nest photo for your mom so no matter how far away you are, you'll still be in the nest. :)

This sweet gift would be great for the environmentally conscious momma and I can personally attest to the durability of these unsponges from NatureJunkies. Cotton on one side and terry cloth on the other, these little gems are great for cleaning just about everything in the house! Washable and helps to reduce waste by eliminating the need for paper towels and/or disposable sponges.

Even though it is getting pretty hot out here in Eastern NC, I still can just imagine cuddling up with this fleece shrug by Designs by Luanne. Actually, when I picture that, I also picture my kids vulturing it and me having to hide it lol. It looks so soft and cuddly!

There are so many other amazing gift ideas, I could just keep posting! But, it's time to get going. There were a few other shops that linked up some awqesome ideas to my facebook page; I just didn't have time to include them. Please check them out here. And, if you have a shop and have some suggestions-by all means post a link in the comments! Confession: I have to still figure out what I am going to make and/or buy for my mom :( Sorry, mom! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
This week has flown by for me! Hope it's been a kind week for everyone! :) So, I was super bummed on Tuesday when I went to create the handmade link up and saw that I would have to pay to create a new one. So, I'm brainstorming for ways to make a new one. Sorry everyone! But, we can still support small businesses!

This week we are meeting Sarah, from SarahCoffeyDesigns. She specializes in home décor and enjoys upcycling items to create one of a kind creations!

Tell us a little about yourself and how your shop came into being:
I have always been creative. My mother is a painter and seamstress and taught me everything she knows. When my kids were born I made all their clothes until they were 5. I had so many compliments I started selling to friends and it grew from there. As they were born I got into scrapbooking as well. I quickly realized people love the look but don't have the time to scrapbook, so I decided to seek my completed albums all you have to do is add your pictures. As I got requests my business was born. I used to sell on Ebay and as other sites grew, I moved the business to Etsy.

I have always sold at craft shows. It started at small church shows and grew to 20+ shows a year.

What inspires you?
I am inspired by my family and friends all the time. So much of what I do was a request from a friend. The sheet music wreaths was a request and now it is a huge part of my business.

What are your hobbies besides creating?
Besides creating I love photography. I have taken a few classes and plan to take more. I also like to paint furniture. I love to take something that looks like it should be tossed and rehabilitating it with paint.

What is your favorite item that you've created?
My favorite item I created is a tough one. I have a bunch, but I would have to say my youngest daughter's Life Book. It is like a baby book for adopted children. It took weeks to create but we look at it and enjoy it all the time. I used to teach classes on how to create them.

Favorite other small businesses?
Favorite other small businesses are Studio123 in Raleigh, NC. They are interior designers and furniture painters. So amazing. I also love a place inCary, NC clued the Cary Creative Center. They are a re-use-it place with tons and tons of recycled things. I love walking through there and getting ideas. I love KnB's Marketplace in Fuquay-Varina. I have a booth there and seek my items as well as found up cycled vintage treasures.
Today we will be talking to Heather from HCM Creations, a shop specializing in hand painted home décor. So, get comfy, grab a tasty beverage (hot or cold), and let's get to know this awesome artist!

Tell us a little about yourself and how your shop came into being:
HCM Creations started from my decision to create gifts for friends and family, my cousin saw some of what I did and asked me to create some things for her wedding from photos she saw on pinterest and that she would pay me. As I created her wedding products, I realized just how much I enjoyed creating with different mediums and decided to start my own business creating things for others.
From there I spent a while choosing a name that could encompass many types of items and finally landed on my own initials, it was simple and covered many products without making people think I only did one thing. HCM Creations was born, I purchased a domain (website is in the works and have put it on the back burner to focus more on my customers and my etsy site instead) created a facebook page and started an Etsy page. Within the first few months I attended a few vendor events and expos, put on my own expo and even got some of my products displayed in a store on consignment; all within 8 months of being in business! I have gained 588 fans on facebook since opening day and never could have made it this far without the support of friends, family and my amazing boyfriend.

What inspires you?
I can be inspired by ANYTHING! Yesterday a thought popped into my head from nothing and will soon be one of the new products I will be offering.

What are your hobbies besides creating?
When I am not painting for HCM Creations, I am working on design work for my OTHER business Krafty Panda Designs ( I also work a 40+ hour job on top of these) so I stay pretty busy throughout the week. I always make time for family and my boyfriend though so I keep it balanced somehow.

What is your favorite item that you've created?
My favorite item so far has been my wedding and family tree frames, they represent such a special time(s) in a couples life and are a great way to show how two lives became one and how their family grew into more.

Hope everyone has been well! We've had a lot going on and I've severely neglected this blog. We had our third little boy at the end of July, so all 3 of my boys have been keeping me busy. :) Our oldest is starting kindergarten next week (very excited for him but nervous).

I have been working on developing and marketing my Facebook page and have spent less time on Etsy. I am able to interact with fans/customers more through Facebook by doing different types of sales and giveaways and am able to better gauge what people are interested in. I have also been doing some trades with other wahms and am loving getting to know them and using their amazing products!

My Facebook page is: http://www.facebook.com/TGiftGarden. Please stop by and say hi! I currently have some ready to ship items and love doing customs so please do not hesitate to contact me if there is something I can create for you!

Also, I am having a giveaway on my page to celebrate reaching 300 fans! To enter, go to the pinned post at the top of my facebook page or click on the giveaway button at the top of the page!

As for the future of this blog: I am going to focus less on what I am doing and more on reviewing the products I have purchased and/or received from other small businesses.

So, check back soon for the first review...Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-32189613943742676342013-01-23T08:33:00.001-05:002013-01-23T08:33:32.235-05:00Smooth Sailing?I am currently working on the second challenge for Persimon Dreams Quilt challenge. The challenge this week is to quilt something using only your favorite color and white. You can read about the cahllenges by clicking on the Project Quilting Button to the right. I know I said after the last one that I was going to do a smaller project, but...I couldn't resist. So now, I will be fighting the clock to get this one done!

My favorite color is blue, but I actually do not have much in the blue fabric department. I found a pattern in one of my quilting books for sailboats and thought it would be a good way to use up my scraps.

I cut out the blocks and triangles and here is the layout of the boats:

I managed to get one sailboat pieced last night:

And all the triangles sewn together:

So, now I just need to piece the other three boats, add strips of white inbetween, figure out what to use as binding and backing, and quilt it by Sunday at noon. I better get to work!

I will be linking up to Freshly Pieced's WIP Wednesday so be sure to check out what everyone else is up to! Have a great day! Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-79033236461821297462013-01-21T07:08:00.000-05:002013-01-21T07:08:47.336-05:00Oh Baby!I'll start this Monday post with the biggest news: We are expecting our third baby July 30th! I have been wanting to tell everyone for a while but I wanted to wait until the first doctor visit and ultrasound were complete. Right now I am 12 weeks and 6 days, and everything is looking good and healthy. I was blessed to have very easy pregnancies with the boys and am hoping this one will be too. We would really like to have a girl this time, but if it's a boy we have a TON of clothes and toys lol. This pregnancy is similar to the others in that coffee makes me feel sick and I get stuffy off and on. It is different in that even tea (hot or cold) makes me sick if I drink too much and I have more moments of yucky-I guess you could say queasiness, without actually getting sick. I have the urge to make little girl clothes and am thinking about looking for patterns for cute summer dresses for me. Of course, it could all just be in my head because I'm hoping for a little girl. :) Oh well, we'll find out in a couple of months!

So, I made progress on the red and black table runner on Friday but then did nothing Saturday and Sunday. I am trying to keep Sunday a day of rest and let me tell ya, it is hard! lol. Although technically if sewing is relaxing to me and more like a hobby, I guess it would be okay, right?!

This week I will mainly be working on the Quilting challenge from Persimon Dreams. The challenge is to quilt something using only your favorite color (and various shades) and white. Since my favorite color is usually blue, I am going to try and use the blues I have, although I have a limited selection. It is really hard to resist the urge to run out to the store and buy some new fabric, but I am being disciplined! I have an idea that I found in one of my quilting books. I like the quilt and am thinking of making it into a wall hanging, but am a little worried about it looking a little plain. And yes, I know I said last week that I was going to do a smaller project but I just can't resist the bigger ones! I'll post pics of how it is coming along Wednesday. :)

I have other upcoming projects but am waiting until it is time to start on them. This week-the challenge will be my main focus and then if there is time, the black and red table runner, and the cat potholder and towel for my friend. Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-69225512735779532192013-01-18T07:52:00.002-05:002013-01-18T08:01:55.077-05:00Projects, Mommy Inspiration, and Treasuries! This week has flown by, but don't they always?! I kind of dropped the ball on my projects. Yesterday got away from me and by the time the kids went to bed, I just could not get myself to into the dining room. I think the cold, rainy weather had something to do with it! Anyway, I finished one tote and am hoping to get the other one done today. It would be wonderful to finish the cat towel and pot holder on Saturday, but you know how that usually goes!

I am super excited to see what Kim and Diane have planned for the next quilting challenge! They will post it over at Persimon Dreams on Sunday!

So,earlier this week, our pastor sent out an email about being a stay at home mom. The author explained how we tend to take on almost a martyr-type role, and exclaim that it is the hardest job in the world. The author basically gives a reality check, that while certainly hard and exhausting, no it is not the hardest job in the world and is actually a blessing compared to what some jobs entail. It was a gentle reality check, not harsh at all and was just what I needed to snap out of my rotten mood. For some reason, Ihad woken up just grumpy towards the world and everything the kids did was driving me crazy. Ever had one of those days?! I had been trying to talk to myself about all I had to be grateful for and how I really had no reason to be grumpy. I guess this article was just what I needed to help snap me out of it. It truly is a blessing to stay home with the kids and even in the midst of one of their bad moments/days, it is still a better job than many others out there! I'll link up the article here.

Well, that is about all I have for today!

1) CLEAN THE HOUSE Progress has been made, but how clean can a house get and stay with two young boys lol

2) Finish my friend's Spring bag (still need to get to Joann's for this) Almost done-made it to Joann's yesterday and got the lining and straps for the bag. Now I just have to finish putting it together. The lining looks very similar to the purple squares on the outside but it's small hearts instead of circles and it is a thin flannel.

3) Make a cat kitchen towel for another friend No progress-still hoping to get this done this week.

4) Design and make a cat potholder for same friend No progress-also hoping to get this done this week, or at least started.

5) Email a third friend some fabric ideas for a gym bag Done!

6) Finish my sis-in-laws bag Progress made and would LOVE to finish it tonight or tomorrow. She asked me for this probably over a year ago and I bought fabric but never made it. She asked for lime green and pink so the outside will look like this:

The inside will look like this:

This is my first reversible bag-I did the blue and purple squares in case she wants a little change. The solid squares are actually sparkly, and I bought yellow and green but ended up not using them. I like how bright and cheery it is!

7) Finish a red and black table runner that I started oh, last year lol Haven't even taken it out yet lol.

So, some progress made which I am happy with of course, but am hoping to make much more before the next quilting challenge opens on Sunday.

Enjoy the day! I think today is one of the last of the nicer days until rain and slightly cooler weather comes in so we will probably be outside.

I will be linking up to Freshly Pieced so be sure to head over there and check out the other WIPs!
I had to do a bit of marathon sewing on Saturday but I finished it.

It was only my second time actually "quilting" something so I am pretty happy with it despite some issues I had. With the first table runner I made, I had some bunching and puffy issues. I just figured my pinning wasn't as up to par as it should be and was told polyester batting has a tendency to make things puffier than cotton batting. For this table runner, I pulled the polyester batting apart so it was even thinner and really took my time and pinned like crazy. Well, the first square I sewed around was very puffy and the next section I tried to quilt had some major bunching and folding over. The third section was even worse. What made it even more frustrating was that I was using a walking foot and had dropped the tension down. I ended up taking those quilting lines out and taking off my walking foot and just using the regular sewing attachment. The quilting came out SO much nicer. I don't think it's perfect (I never think that) but overall I am happy with the end result. So, is my walking foot a dud, or what? I do not even want to mess with it anymore.

No quilting challenge this week so I am going to try and tackle my list of to-do's. Persimon dreams is also starting a quilt along this week and I am so tempted to join in. However, I am almost positive I do not have enough coordinating fabric so I am going to try and resist! Okay, so here is what I hope to at least make a dent in:

1) CLEAN THE HOUSE lol
2) Finish my friend's Spring bag (still need to get to Joann's for this)
3) Make a cat kitchen towel for another friend
4) Design and make a cat potholder for same friend
5) Email a third friend some fabric ideas for a gym bag
6) Finish my sis-in-laws bag
7) Finish a red and black table runner that I started oh, last year lol

So, how many of these will actually finish? Hopefully more than one, but we will see! Hope everyone has a great week!
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-89902838883566309742013-01-11T05:32:00.000-05:002013-01-11T05:35:28.480-05:00The Week and Lessons LearnedHappy friday! Except hubby may be working Sat and Sun. :( Oh well, at least it is supposed to continue to be nice out. My older son's first dentist visit went extremely well. He did not seem to be stressing about it, more excited actually. He kept asking when his appointment was. Before we went in, he said he was a little nervous. The girl that did his teeth was amazing with him and had him laughing. His xrays looked fine and the dentist said he had beautiful teeth. Yay! Let's hope it stays that way. We took the younger one along too so he could see, even though he has another year and a half before they will give him his first cleaning. After C was done, little H climbed right up in the chair, ready for his turn. So, cute. I am definitely glad he had such a good first experience. I remember dreading going to the dentist as a child.

This week the boys have been doing a lot of pretend remote control play, mostly flying helicopters and planes. While we were visiting my family over Christmas, my Poppop took us out to the flying field he uses for his model airplanes. My husband flew the airplane a couple of times and C got to try for a minute and even got the plane to do a loop-de-loop. My dad has a flight simulator program on his computer and the boys are always asking him to fly it. My dad also has a smaller remote controlled helicopter that they thought was awesome. So, for Christmas they got remote controlled trucks and my husband got a remote helicopter like my dad has. The batteries on the trucks were dead when we got home (they were apparently left on the whole 11 hour drive home) and one has a broken control that we need to fix. They love when my husband flies his helicopter in the house (he enjoys it too) and so while he is at work, they make up their own. They use random toy steering wheels and bike ramps, basically whatever they find, as remotes for their planes, helicopters, motorcycles, etc. It is so cute to watch and I know my Poppop would be so tickled to see them doing that.

We got a little bit of yard work done the other day, there is still a lot to be done. This weather is making me want to go ahead and plant my bulbs and get the early spring garden started but I think I need to wait a few more weeks, just in case. In the meantime, there is plenty of prep work to do to the yard and I can start seeds indoors in just a little while. I also saw somewhere (probably Pinterest) cutting the top off a 2 liter bottle, filling it with soil and planting carrot seeds in it. That way the kids can watch them grow. I'm hoping to do that this weekend.

No finished projects to display. I only have 2 days to finish the table runner for the quilt challenge. I have the squares and inbetween strips sewn. I just need to add the side borders, cut out backing and batting, quilt, and bind it. My friend's bag is still waiting on lining and straps, but I am hoping to get to Joanns this weekend as well.

I would have to say my lesson learned from this week is being satisfied with what you have, specifically fabric and skills. I received a Connecting Threads and a Keepsake Quilting catalog in the mail yesterday. Looking at all of the amazing fabric and threads inspired me but then I began to feel frustrated because I do not have such an extensive collection from which to choose. I also see all of the quilts and want to do them so badly but in reality, a lot of the designs would probably be too difficult for me. I also need to work on the quilting part-I have only done it once. So, I started to get frustrated but quickly realized that those are things that will come with time. I need to focus on what I CAN do and what I already have on hand. I need to pick projects that I am excited about and that can challenge me without being too advanced. Most of all, I need to ENJOY what I am doing or it is not going to come together. Just my little philosophical thought.

Have a great weekend! Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-2666411405010424422013-01-09T10:16:00.000-05:002013-01-09T10:16:58.127-05:00Works in Progress-Sewing and Potty TrainingMid-week! Hoping to get the boys outside for longer today because it is supposed to be so nice out. Tomorrow it is supposed to be cloudy/rainy plus I have a dr appointment and my 4 yr old has his first dentist appointment. He is a little nervous but my husband got him excited/okay with it, at least temporarily. So, we'll see how it goes.

Anyway, today is work-in-progress Wednesday So hopefully the pictures will load.

My two main projects are both pink. The first is my friend's spring bag. I just need to figure what I am using for the lining and straps.

My second project is for a quilt challenge-a square in a square in a square. The quilting challenge comes from Kim over at Persimon Dreams and this is the first week's challenge. I know I said in the last post I was going to do a set of potholders but I couldn't resist going bigger and doing a table runner. I am thinking I am going to add white inbetween the squares and around the edges as a border.

I was hoping to actually finish the squares but am happy with what I accomplished yesterday given how many times I had to get up for my non-nappers during nap time.

Speaking of one of my non-nappers...my two yr old could be considered a work in progress with potty training. He keeps his pull up dry all day and has even conquered number two. But, when he has big boy underwear on, he has accidents. With my older son, once we made the switch, he was good to go with no accidents. So, this back tracking is kind of new to me. I think the main thing with him is he doesn't feel like taking a break from playing to go potty and is not bothered by wet underwear. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to make sure to have him go on a more regular schedule. He will get it eventually. I was just hoping for a nice, quick, and easy transition. :)
I will be linking up to Freshly Pieced so be sure to see what others are busy creating and have a great rest of the week!
Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-58721463489923363822013-01-07T09:10:00.001-05:002013-01-07T09:11:14.098-05:00Monday, MondayGood Monday morning, back to the routines. Well, not really. Hubby is home today, so not sure how the day will go. Sometimes, I'm actually more motivated to get stuff done when he is home and sometimes I am a complete lazo. :)

He worked Saturday so the kids and I were complete couch potatoes and watched tv most of the day. I finally got to see "Tangled" and really enjoyed it. My older son was kid of pouty about watching it (I think because it had a girl as the main character), but despite that, he enjoyed it. When my husband got home we tried a new place in town called It's a Forkful. It is kind of a build-it-yourself place with rice, pasta, burritos, and salads. I was really excited about it because in town we have mostly fast food and larger chain restaurants. Overall, I was not totally crazy about it-it was good and a nice healthy alternative, but I think I prefer another local place, Your Way Cafe. They have delicious sandwiches and salads. Anyway, we went to a frozen yogurt place afterwards, Sweet Frog, and it was very good. So, overall, a fun night of trying new places.

Sunday we went to church. The kids were a mess! lol. Ours seem to be the least behaved, hence why we sit in the back. They are not terrible kids, they are just full-blooded boys and have a hard time sitting still and being quiet for that long. I am amazed watching how quiet and still the other kids are. Oh well, ours are a work in progress :) Thankfully, our church is very understanding and really a great group of people. After church, we unloaded a carload off at Goodwill and did our grocery run. We have been trying to make healthier choices, but unfortunately it has raised our grocery bill. Although, part of the increase comes from a lack of discipline on our part :) I am REALLY hoping I can get a garden to actually grow and produce this spring. Our dream is to someday have our own farm, but for now learning to grow things is my main focus. We do not eat that unhealthy in general, we are just trying to increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially when snacking.

So, I just found a weekly quilt challenge that I think I want to try. The challenge is to do a square in a square in a square. The project can be any size, it just has to be completed in a week. At first I had an elaborate plan for a table runner but have since come to my senses about what I can actually accomplish in a week. I am now thinking about doing a set of potholders, but still feel like I am taking the easy way out. Oh well, it will be good for me to practice quilting on a smaller scale and maybe my projects can become bigger as I go. You can find all of the details at Persimon Dreams. I am pretty excited about and now just have to figure out which fabrics I want to use...

I started out last week planning on keeping my sewing and crochet plans simple and to limit them to a few things on my to-do list at a time. HAHAHA, this year seems to have taken off which is awesome and I am not complaining. I just need to get on top of it!

Anyway, hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. It is supposed to be in the 60's this week here. Crazy. I prefer having actual seasons but cannot complain about the nice weather. :)

Have a great day!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-2113570602042015462013-01-04T08:05:00.000-05:002013-01-04T08:05:38.618-05:00Creating and Playing and FridayHappy Friday! Except that I'm so confused from the holidays on what day it is :)

Well, it's been a pretty productive week, even with the hubby home the first half of it. I love when he is home of course, but definitely don't get as much done.

I finished the heart towel and found and listed a pink crochet snake that I had made for a relative that changed her mind on color.

I have squares cut and ready to make a spring bag for a friend. You can see the cut out squares here.

I apologize for the links instead of direct pictures, but for some reason my uploader isn't working :(

Another friend reminded me about making animal shaped potholders and I found these cute squares so we'll see what I come up with. You can see pictures here.

Finally, I may be making a bag for my aunt; hoping she can find the perfect fabric for the project!

So, yeah, lots of planning, now to get doing :)

With the spring bag, I was able to stick to using what I had on hand and am happy with the color and design combo. I am not sure what I am going to do for the handles and lining yet, but I'll decide after I have made the outer shell.

My aunt originally wanted to use a birdhouse fabric I had from Fabric Central's Aerie bundle for the bag. Unfortunately, I did not have near enough of it and it is no longer carried at Joann's. I am really bummed they do not sell that line anymore because it was such a pretty group of fabrics, and it could have been used in so many projects. You can see my scraps from the bird fabric here.

Anyway, I have had a pretty good week with the kids. They have still been adjusting to being back at home and getting into our very loose routines. With all of their new toys, they have been bouncing from area to area and toy to toy-generally being messier. So, we are working on remembering to clean up again. My older one got a good deal of Playmobil and that has kept both of them pretty busy.

He also got some starter science kits-a fizzy foamy one and a color mixing/crystal growing set. We did the fizzy foamy set the other day. The kit has about 7 different activities and I jumped right to the volcano one. It hardly bubbled up so I tried the activity labeled "More eruptions". That one bubbled up more but neither really fizzed up and spilled over so while the kids thought it was cool, I was a little disappointed. Looking at the other activities, I realize that I probably should have done them in order because it goes through acids and bases and what makes it fizz and all that. But, at the same time, I feel all of that information would be lost on a 4 yr old and 2 yr old. The ingredients are basic and are all kitchen friendly-vegetable oil, baking soda, citric acid, etc. So, even if I run out of something from the kit, I can easily replace it. We haven't tried the color mixing/crystal growing set yet-hopefully today or tomorrow.

I have been struggling with how to structure their day and at times I have even tried to plan activities and lessons for them because I worry about them missing out on learning while being home. But, I have come to realize (which I already somewhat knew and just needed to accept) that they will learn just fine through playing and experiencing each day. My mom did not plan out activities and lessons for my brother and me and I do not think either one of us went to preschool and we did pretty well in school. Right now, my boys just need me to play with them and enhance their play experiences. They usually help me bake and I hear my 2 yr old saying he needs a teaspoon while playing in the tub. We count while playing games and lining up cars; we find shapes and colors all around us. If my 4 yr old draws a picture of a fish or cave, I have him write the word on the paper. Seeing what my boys are capable of doing, reassures me that they are on the right track.

For those that do more structured days with their young children-I admire you and appreciate all of the hard work you put into it. For me, my day just gets away too quickly and when I plan activities they almost never go the way I planned. So, I let them decide how they want to sped each moment of their day (within reason) and try to enhance it. They both have Mobigo's which is a game system for children 3 yearsto about 7 years. The cartridges are well known tv and movie characters, except the generic one that comes with it. The games help them with shapes, colors, math, letter and word recognition, etc. Every game has an educational purpose. The boys do not play them every day and when they do, it is not for hours on end, but I think it is a fun way for them to learn the basic skills while giving them some quiet time.

Anyway, enough rambling...Hope you have a great Friday and weekend!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936989546930555538noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993086139222962758.post-58765586074805438892013-01-02T06:08:00.001-05:002013-01-02T06:08:52.516-05:00New Year!Happy New Year, everyone! Hope you all had a good new year's eve and are starting 2013 on a positive note. I did not make it to midnight-I think I gave up around ten. My four-year-old made it to eleven, and my hubby came to bed a couple of minutes before midnight, only because he got sucked into a football game. Such an exciting night life we have! :)

How are the resolutions going so far? I did not make any official ones, besides reading my Bible every day. I tried last year and think I did it for a few months before I fell out of it. So, maybe this year I will last longer.

I hope to blog more consistently. I have been struggling with what I want the main focus of this blog to be, and have decided that it should just be about my life. And, since my life is all over the place, then it is okay for this blog to be all over the place subject-wise. So, I think it will be a mix of my crafts, my kids, and how we are working towards our goals in life-mainly simplifying our home life and working towards owning a small farm/homestead.

In my crafting, I am going to try to use what I have more than buying new material. I made most of my gifts this year based on what I had and am for the most part, very happy with how things turned out. I made some holiday pillows. a purse, Bible cover, candle mats, and a wall hanging. Hopefully, everyone really enjoyed their gifts.

My first project of the year is a tea towel/kitchen towel. I wanted to do a patchwork heart and then added as I went. I hand-sewed the patchwork (partly because I enjoy sewing by hand and partly because my machine and I were not getting along working on the previous project), machine stitched the bottom strip, and am currently hand sewing a blanket stitch around the hearts.

Since I am not turning down the edges as I sew, I applied a fray blocker around the raw edges to make the towel more machine wash friendly. The fusible backing I have is a heavier type and tends to make the applique stiffer so I used it sparingly. I am not sure if I am going to list it on my etsy shop, list it here and on facebook, or just give it to a family member. If you would like this towel, or one like it, just send me a message at mastarkey81@yahoo.com.

So, I feel like I have more that I would like to ramble on about but think I will save it for another day!

I will be linking up at Freshly Pieced so be sure and check out what other fellow bloggers are up to and have a great day! Sorry guys, this week got away from me again! My 2 yr old got sick, and my school work has really amped up, so I may not be posting as much.

Today is Friday, yay! Not only that, but it's Feature Friday! Our feature today is a sweet married couple: Tarieli and Olivia and their Etsy shop HeyBeLucky:

Tell us a little about yourself and how your shop came into being:
We are Olivia and Tarieli, married couple from Estonia,
Europe. We named our brand Be Lucky because we wanted to create things that bring happiness and luck to people.

Olivia is illustrator and creates all the pictures for Be Lucky products. Tarieli helps with ideas and is responsible for getting the pictures on products. We started our small company last summer and have been selling our products in Estonia. Now we hope to find people interested in our stuff outside of Estonia and so we opened Etsy shop :) At the moment we make jewelry, pictures, postcards and buttons, but already have ideas for many-many new products.

What inspires you?
Of course many things around us are inspiring. Things like nature, city, people, music, books, movies etc. But the most inspiring is communication between us. When we discuss some product, it’s all pure magic: ideas start coming out, our eyes are shining, we talk fast and put all the crazy thoughts on paper. So the ideas for all our products are born when we talk with each other.

What do you like to do when you are not creating?
Well, we spend a lof of time together as we both work at home. But it’s never enough and so we love to do all things together: movies, concerts, travelling or just walking with our dog.

What is your favorite item that you've created?
It’s our first product: www.etsy.com/listing/82749875/lucky-in-love-9x6-print-nursery-art. Many people said good about this picture and it became popular. It’s our first “baby” and therefore we love it most :)

Favorite purchase or shop on etsy?
One of the first shops we’ve seen on Etsy and the one that we love very much is www.etsy.com/shop/BeautySpot. You can see that many of shops on Etsy include products that are made with passion and love, but it feels like BeautySpot have gone to next level, which means respect to small details and professionalism.

Links for you: blog, facebook, website, etc?
Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/HeyBeLucky

Website and blog: www.belucky.eu/blog

Facebook: www.facebook.com/belucky.eu

About 2.5 years ago, I became a
stay-at-home mom after working my entire life. Before children, my
creativity was poured into my day job - I was in sales, and was
responsible for creating a lot of my own marketing materials. It was
nice to have a break for a while and to focus on raising my first
son, but when I became pregnant again, I felt this absolute *need* to
make him a layette. So I did – I made blankets and burp cloths,
hooded towels and washcloths. And then I started to make them as
gifts for friends who were pregnant when someone suggested that I
should try selling them on Etsy. Thus, Christine’s Baby was born!
As my children grow and change, so do the offerings in my shop. I’m
no longer just making baby blankets, but clothing, accessories, and
goods for the home as well. I’m also now offering embroidery,
monogramming, and applique thanks to my new sewing and embroidery
machine!

My children inspire me to constantly do
more, and to do it well. My oldest son loves to go to the fabric
store with me and has a really great eye for color and pattern. He
will find a fabric or a piece of ribbon and tell me I need to make
something with it (which is how my Pirate Shorts came into being).
And I love to be challenged – I’ll see a picture in a magazine or
a piece of clothing in the store and think, “hmmm. . . I could do
that!” And then I just have to go home and try!

What do you like to do when you
are not creating? You can usually find me at the park with my
kids! My husband and I also love to travel, and we try to get to the
Caribbean at least once a year. We also love good wine and visiting
Napa (so beautiful, no matter what time of year it is!)

I have so many favorites! The most
functional item I created for *me* has got to be the water-resistant
diaper clutch. A year ago, I was constantly on the go with my son
and would throw a water bottle in my bag along with my phone and some
diapers. My phone and diapers would always get soggy from the
condensation, and I couldn’t find a product at a reasonable price
point in fabric that I liked that would protect my diapers and phone.
So, I designed and made the diaper clutch. I still use it in my
purse today (and have sold quite a few!) My new favorite has got to
be the princess shirt/ruffle skirt outfit - I don’t have girls of
my own, and it was fun to make something so frilly!

so many creative people out there!

Edi is a shop owner at Memoriesforlifesb and is stopping by today to tell us a little about herself and her work:
I've been paper crafting for over 15 years. I started out in stamping and then moved to scrapbooking. My shop started small with handmade greeting cards and soon I added scrapbooks. In February 2011 I purchased a laser engraver and my whole world changed! This machine gave me the ability to expand my creativity and my shop. It also allowed me to quit my factory job I'd been at for 10 years! I'm now able to offer a wide variety of items in my shop and I can personalize each one :)
My inspiration seems to come in waves. I'll see something and think of 20 other ideas that it can be made into. Like a wooden magnet...it can become a pendant, an earring, a key chain. And why not make them in color? And what about shapes? My brain works like this in circles thinking of new things all the time...and all it takes is one little idea :)

What do you like to do when you are not creating?
During the summer my boyfriend and I enjoy air boating. It's so relaxing to be on the river and out in nature! I also enjoy quiet movie nights on the couch :)
I love making engraved photos! It's so amazing watching them come to life on the wood!
I also love making items for weddings (like my guest books and invitations). This allows me to work closely with my customers and be a small part of their big day.

Favorite purchase or shop on etsy?
I don't have one shop in particular, but I think I could browse the jewelry section for hours every day!

Any local events coming up that you will be selling at or shops where your work is displayed?
I have 4 shows planned for this fall. One in September, two in October and one in November. I also sell on consignment at two local wineries.
Here it is, another Wednesday! How has your week been going? Let's see, I can barely remember Monday for some reason-I think it was kind of a lazy day. Yesterday, my hubby stayed home because he wasn't feeling well Monday. Took the kiddos to the partnership yesterday, let them play for a while, came home with some tinker toy-type toys and some counting worms with activity cards. I think they'll really enjoy them. Anyway, having the extra person home really threw me out of my routine. So, now I'm trying to get back in it!

I finished my fall quilted table runner-yay!

I am hoping to start on the Halloween one this week. Need to order some black quilting thread.

Here is the other project I'm working on:

It will be a crochet lap blanket. Eight more strips to go!

Someone told me recently that the mom in a family is the glue that holds the whole household together. While I think I knew that on some level, I am realizing how much we really do hold it all together. More than that, we are like a little bag of tools, ready to make all the quick fixes needed to keep a machine running smoothly.

Hammering out the kinks. We have the abilitiy to read others' emotions and tweak them as needed. Example from this morning (already): My 4 year old had tears at the ready at every little thing. He didn't like the cup I put his milk in, he couldn't accept that a dvd had to go in its case at one spot versus the one he wanted to put it in, his brother touched his blanket, we didn't have the breakfast he wanted, etc. He is not sick, probably just got up too early or woke up emotional. As frustrated as it made me, I realized patience and discussion was the best route. The moodiness has resolved on its own, and now we have our normal goofy 4 yr old back.

Oiling the machine. We have the running to-do list in our heads. Ours is most obvious when trying to leave the house. My husband is always asking "Okay, what else do we need to do?". Even though it's the same list everytime, with some minor changes, I guess it's like a cheat sheet. Our tasks for them are like little drops of oil to keep them moving and efficient, while we complete our tasks.

Performing routine maintainance. Clothes get washed and put away, dishes get cleaned, food is always available, and meals are cooked and served. We keep the house running smoothly, and most times, the other members forget or do not realize how much gets done.

Most importantly, we are the glue, used to hold everyone together, make quick fixes, and bond to each other.

I'm sure I could take this to a deeper level, but a certain 2 yr old is playing with my hair and trying to mess with the computer...

For me, I'm honored to have this responsibility. At times, it does get frustrating and overwhelming. But, I am so blessed to have a husband is understanding and supportive. He has no problem stepping in when I need it. My husband and kids motivate me every day to be better.

Every household has its own dynamics. What do you compare yourself to?
As if you didn't already know. So, I decided to switch it up a bit- I have been doing "Finished Fridays" posts but have realized that I'm really not going to have something completed every Friday. And when I do complete something, I am not going to want to wait until Friday to share. Plus, reading about me all of the time must get boring. So, I decided to do either Friday Finds or Feature Fridays.

Friday Finds will be things that I have found around Etsy, Pinterest, or wherever that I think are just amazing, awesome, etc. Feature Fridays will be one shop on Etsy, business, or blog. So, if you have one of those and would like to be featured, send me an email at mastarkey81@yahoo.com.

So here are a few of my favorite things:

Clicking on the picture above should take you to the listing for the white apricot tea and from there you can browse his selection.

They have a great selection of various t-shirts for men, women, and children, scarves, dresses, and more. This is one of the shops that I go back to constantly just to browse and plan on ordering much more as soon as I can.

Another wonderful shop I have found on Etsy. TraceyGurleyBathBody has some wonderful products, designs and creates all of her labels, and has serviced some of the stars! I have her Gardenia lotion and Lavender & Linen Lotion. The texture is thick and moisturizes wonderfully without being oily and the scent is strong and delicious without being overbearing.

Ugh, now I want to go shopping for me! So, these are just some of the amazing products that come from amazing shops that are run by some amazing people. Christmas is coming up fast so you may want to start browsing...

Have a great weekend!
This week is going by wonderfully, and I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to stay home with my children. This life of staying home with them feels so much more fulfilling. Don't get me wrong, we still have some bad moments and some "what were you thinking?!" moments, but overall, I am very happy with my decision to stay home. Hopefully, our finances will be happy too; guess we'll see.

The weather has started to cool down here; which is probably helping with my inner joy. The kiddos and I have been playing outside more; that is definitely good for all of us! I would love to get some weeding done but our yard is garden spider central this year and I just haven't felt like dealing with them. We've also seen more snakes this year. Well, maybe about the same as last year but this year they have been closer to the house. I do not do snakes. I'm terrified of them. I've taken huge steps this year-I have gone to the serpentarium twice. Once was at feeding time. I still can't go into the little boxed in area of snakes at the pet store. I can go near the glass at zoos and serpentariums, but not pet stores. I think I feel like their tanks are less secure. I will not go in to my brother-in-law's house for that same reason. I believe he has 8 snakes?! No thanks. Anyway...

We planted some seeds: various beans, lettuce, carrots, and some herbs. The lettuce has sprouted but I can't ever seem to get it to grow past this first stage. Most of the beans have sprouted. No carrots, but they take longer I think. No herbs, but it's probably too cold for them. I WILL learn how to successfully garden! Planning on taking the boys to the farmer's market today. Last year they had some delicious apples, so I am kind of hoping to see them again this year. I would love to find an orchard nearby to take them to, but I think the closest is still a few hours away.

Switching gears...

WIP WEDNESDAY

I have found that having various projects in the works can be nice to switch things up, but can also start to frazzle me.

I am hoping to get my orange yarn in today to finish the orange kitchen towel with the black stripe shown in last week's post.

I've also started crocheting a blanket but need the orange yarn (and black) that should come in the mail today. I made this blanket for my cousin. At first I was a little bothered by the size-it is more of a lap blanket than full afghan. But, I think it will be a good lap blanket or I could always add more to it. We'll see. I was really happy with how the colors popped against the black. I don't have much done so you'll have to wait to see as it progresses.

I've got my fall table runner together and have started quilting it. I finished the first set of diagonal lines and have started doing the other set. SO far, no bubbles. The material seems to be a little puffier than I would like. But, after the start I had with it on Friday, I'm not complaining! It seems I have to learn the same lessons over and over. 1) Don't try to start something if you are already frustrated and not able to focus completely. 2) Read up on necessary steps before jumping in. I was irritated Friday so decided starting to quilt the table runner would be a good idea. NOT. My 2yr old woke up during the process but I continued on in my quest, even though I knew better. I couldn't install the walking foot (not focused because it was actually easy) and when I ran my project through to do the first and second diagonal lines, the backing shifted drastically. Well, that put me over the edge. I thought the walking foot was supposed to keep that in line!? After I calmed down, I did some research and found that the walking foot does not work miracles. I learned about taping the back down and pinning galore. It made a hug difference! Now this table runner isn't perfect but so far I'm happy with how it is looking. I'm using YLI quilting thread and so far I like it but don't have anything to compare it to. I think fussy cutting the leaves distorted my squares a little (all operator error). I think having a clear template would be much easier, will have to put that on my list. So, what do you think?
